On 2 October 2026,
Argentina announced a citizenship by investment programme, the first in South
America. Applications are expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2026. No
date has been set, and no application can be filed yet.
What Has Been Announced
There are two routes: a
non-refundable contribution to the National Treasury from US0,000, or a
US0,000 government security created for the programme. Press reports
describe the security as a seven-year bond that pays no interest; its official
terms have not been published.
Family members join
through additional contributions: US0,000 for a spouse, US0,000 for each
unmarried child aged 18 to 25 with no children of their own, and US,000 for
each child under 18. For a couple with two minor children, the Ministry of Economy’s
own example is US0,000 on the contribution route. On the bond route, the
same family would pay around US0,000, according to IMI Daily. That is a
press report, not an official figure.
What Is Still Missing
• Authorised agents. The criteria for
certifying agents have not been published. Reports expect them around early
November.
• Implementing rules. These include the
final bond terms and which nationalities will be accepted, restricted or
excluded.
• A settled legal basis. The programme
rests on Decree 366/2025, which two appeal courts ruled against in June 2026.
The case is now before the Supreme Court, and no ruling has been reported.
Opposition lawmakers have also filed three bills, in both chambers of Congress,
to repeal the investment route. They are bills, not law.
What Families Can Do Now
Define what a second
citizenship should do for your family. Decide who needs to be included now and
who may need to be included later. Start building a clear, documented record of
where your funds come from and how they moved. Argentina has said it will examine
this closely, and the work is useful for any programme.
Since no application can
be filed yet, any offer of “early access” or a guaranteed place should be read
with care.
Our Position
Sharif Group is following
the programme closely. We will advise families on it once its rules are
published. Until then, we start where we always start: with a family’s
objectives and eligibility.
